A carrier can lock a feature to its network though, considering the Verizon hotspot uses the Verizon network. The actual hotspot hardware is not locked, it only requires a separate app to open it, or like in some cases, just go to the Network Settings in the phone. Jun 15, 2020 Auto Unlock Mac using your Apple Watch is a nice feature to avoid entering the password. This feature is available with all Apple Watch but limited to Macs manufactured in 2013 and later. For any reason, if you can’t unlock Mac with Apple Watch, there’s nothing to disappoint. You’re enjoying your vacation on an island beach or a mountain resort and you want to share photos you’ve taken with friends and family. Unfortunately, the resort can only provide you with a wired connection, which means in order for you to access the Internet you need a wired LAN. You can also try transferring the photos from your iPhone to your Mac via a USB portal, but there’s another handy workaround that you should know how, that is to share your Mac’s Internet via hotspot.
Fortunately, you can hotspot your Mac and it is not as difficult as you might think. Just follow these basic steps and you’ll have a Wi-Fi connection you can use not just for your iPhone but for other devices as well.
Create a Personal Wi-Fi hotspot Using Your Ethernet Connection
- Make sure your Mac is connected to the Internet through a wired connection.
- Open Internet Sharing on your Mac. Internet Sharing can be found in the Sharing folder of the System Preferences menu.
- Choose ‘Ethernet’ for the ‘Share Your Connection From’ selection.
- Choose ‘Wi-Fi’ for the ‘To Computer Using’ selection.
- Set the Wi-Fi security options.
- Even though you may be alone in your home or room, it would still be a good idea to set the security options so that only you or the people you trust can use the Wi-Fi hotspot. To set the security options, click on Wi-Fi options, type in your network name, select WPA2 Personal for security, type in a password, then verify the same password. Once you click on OK, you’re all set.
- Click the Check Box besides Internet Sharing.
- Click Start to share your Mac’s Internet connection via Wi-Fi.
How to Connect Your iPhone to the Mac Wi-Fi Hotspot
Now that you’ve set up your Mac Wi-Fi hotspot, all you need to do is connect your iPhone. Here are the steps:
- Open Settings, Select Wi-Fi, Select the Network you created on your Mac.
- Type in the password you entered on your Mac’s WPA2 Personal Security settings.
- Surf the Internet.
Connecting Your iPad and Other Devices to the Mac Wi-Fi
If there are other devices that you would like to connect to your Mac’s hotspot, all you need to do is to repeat the same steps you did to connect your iPhone.
Create a Mac Wi-Fi hotspot Using a Wi-Fi Connection
Taking the vacation scenario once more, another situation you may find yourself in is when the resort or hotel only allows you to connect a single device to their Wi-Fi. Turning your Mac into a hotspot while it’s connected to Wi-Fi could be a bit more complicated, though.
Assuming you don’t have a separate device called a USB Wi-Fi adapter, you can use Bluetooth to configure a Bluetooth Personal Area Network (PAN) instead. To do this, follow these steps:
- Turn on Bluetooth on your Mac. Go to System Preferences > Bluetooth > Turn Bluetooth On.
- Turn on Bluetooth on your iPhone.
- Let your Mac and iPhone pair with each other.
- On your Mac, go to System Preferences > Internet Sharing, then select Share Your Connection from Wi-Fi.
- Check the Share Your Connection to computers using ‘Bluetooth PAN’ box.
- Check the Internet Sharing box on the left side of the screen.
- Select Start and your iPhone will be able to share the Mac’s Wi-Fi Internet connection using Bluetooth.
Learning how to share your Mac’s Internet connection by turning it into a Wi-Fi hotspot can actually help you in a lot of situations. However, you’ll also need to learn how to take care of your Mac properly so everything works out each and every time. One of the best ways to do this is to use a 3rd party cleaning-tool like Tweakbit MacRepair. It can help keep your Mac in the best shape at all times by scanning and getting rid of problematic and corrupted files and programs.

Web restrictions work well for my kiddos' iphones. We use the disney circle at home, with the disney circle GO! product to provide filtering when not at home. (we also use restrictions to turn off Safari and only allow apps we know to be installed, otherwise the app store is off. We're pretty draconian parents. But that's not important right now)
Turning on personal hotspot on a phone with data effectively bypasses *everything*. So kid 2 has a phone with no data but a browser. Kid 1 has an iphone that has browser locked and web restrictions on, but is allowed to have data so he can play Pokemon Go, read certain wiki apps, and use iMessage.
Kid 1 turns on personal hotspot, kid2 connects his phone (or laptop, or whatever) through it and volia! Unfettered internet access.

Personal Hotspot Mac
IF, however, there's a way to disable personal hotspot, the issue neatly goes away. Yes, you can still play Pokemon Go and iMessage is still enabled, but you can't be sneaky. (please, no comments on how I should trust my kids. I do, but I was once a 14yo male. full stop.)
I could disable data completely, but I'd like to allow some stuff.
The web restrictions and browser blocking are a great start. And I would have thought that locking cellular settings (with the personal hotspot OFF) would prevent making changes. Nope. Still allows flipping the switch regardless.
Am I missing something stupid-obvious? (certainly wouldn't be the first time.)
cheers!
